Retiring Republican Rep. John Shimkus is ending his support for President Donald Trump after this week‘s withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Syria-Turkey border, calling the move “despicable.”on Thursday that after he learned about the withdrawal, he told his own chief of staff to “pull my name off the ‘I support Donald Trump’ list.

The Syrian Kurds worked closely with American forces to battle the Islamic State, and lawmakers from both parties railed against the U.S. pulling out of Syria, saying we’re abandoning our allies and possibly allowing ISIS to reemerge as a threat. Shimkus, a 12-term congressman who announced in August that he wouldn’t seek reelection, said he was embarrassed by Trump’s Syria decision and “saddened for the Kurdish people.”Shimkus didn’t discuss in detail the ongoing impeachment inquiry into Trump, but told the radio station he was “troubled” that Trump pressured President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a potential rival for the presidency in 2020.
