American tennis star Danielle Collins wasted no time disappearing from the spotlight after bombing out of her final US Open campaign on Wednesday morning . The 30-year-old 2022 Australian Open finalist announced her retirement ahead of her home grand slam at Flushing Meadows, giving American fans one last chance to get behind her. Her fairytale farewell didn’t last long though, crashing out to countrywoman Caroline Dolehide in the first round, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

I don’t wanna be like Gaylord so I think I’m good.” Elsewhere at the year’s last grand slam, world No.1 Iga Swiatek overcame a slew of unforced errors to secure her spot in the second round of the US Open with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova. Swiatek, who has the 2022 US Open among her five grand slam titles, converted three of six break-point chances but also racked up 41 unforced errors en route to securing the victory in one hour, 52 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
