The notorious 'Boulie Tacker', who has evaded capture for years, has returned despite police efforts
For about a year, they thought the culprit had finally given up. Now the tacks have started appearing again.
George Mihailides, who runs a Facebook group called "Stop The Tacks", said things had been quiet since theVicRoads, which has cleared the road of thousands of tacks using a magnetic mat, had stopped its regular sweep. But in recent weeks, the tacks have returned, causing punctures and putting riders' safety at risk. Cyclists have uploaded photos on social media and noted their location, with the Chandler Highway end of the road near the bridge over the Eastern Freeway one of the regular danger zones.
Police have talked tough about catching the tacker, but have yet to arrest anyone in connection with the bizarre crime. In 2016,Boroondara crime investigation unit said it was continuing to look into the matter, noting that more than 1000 punctured bike tyres had been reported in the past five years. Some cyclists have sustained serious injuries, with the costs to bike riders estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.
