When colonisation came to this country, basically a lot of land clearing occurred. There was a lot of agriculture, sugar was one of the major industries. LUCY COOPER: Marion Adcock grew up in the town of Ingham on a cane farm and says her grandfather discovered these ancient artifacts in the 1920s.The land was uncleared in 1923. So when granddad was clearing and stuff like that, sometime during the cultivation of the land to get ready for cane, he came across these artefacts.
LAURIE BATEMAN: So today is very important. It is a handover of the artefacts from Marion back to a traditional owner of those artefacts.LAURIE BATEMAN: Or two canoes. THOMAS HOLDEN: This is probably one of the most significant finds that we've had and one of the reputable ones where it's someone who used to be a landowner is actually finally returned something to us.THOMAS HOLDEN: Yeah, I seen it but I thought I didn't realise it was so big.THOMAS HOLDEN: So it would be a bit of twine around there to keep there and that would have been their grip.
