“He’s a competitive guy,” Carbery said of Connor McMichael. “He’s a gamer. I’ll use that phrase a lot. I bet on gamers.”
For the majority of the Capitals, the hiring of Spencer Carbery to be Washington’s coach brought a fresh start. But for Connor McMichael — and a handful of other forwards, including Joe Snively, Beck Malenstyn and Aliaksei Protas — Carbery’s return to the Capitals’ organization was a reunion.McMichael played for Carbery with Hershey, Washington’s American Hockey League affiliate, during the shortened 2020-21 season, his first year as a professional.
After making the opening night roster in 2021 and playing 68 games with the Capitals as a second-year pro, McMichael took a step backward last season. Washington looked at him during training camp as a possible replacement for the injured Nicklas Backstrom as the second-line center, but McMichael didn’t last in the role. He was a healthy scratch for Washington’s season opener and played in just six of the first 20 games before being sent back to Hershey, where he spent the rest of the season.
“I want to see him be able to play with some veteran NHL players, get moved to the wing and be productive,” Carbery said. “Be able to take that step like we’re all hoping, and I believe he will. Obviously, winning a Calder Cup last year and having that experience, and just [being] a year older, I’m really, really optimistic about Mikes.
“They’re two easy players to play with,” McMichael said. “They make really good plays, and they’ve obviously smart out there. Just trying to read off them and do the best I can.”“He’s a competitive guy,” Carbery said. “He’s a gamer. I’ll use that phrase a lot. I bet on gamers. When the chips are down and the game’s on the line, he wants the puck. He wants to be the guy. Players like that, I just find, [they] find ways to have success in this league.
