Has Aston Martin taken a step backward with its Imola upgrades? Fernando Alonso doesn't believe so...

Fernando Alonso believes Aston Martin has taken a step forward with their car, but not as big as other teams have managed.

But while, on paper, the upgrades fitted to the AMR24 didn’t appear to work out, the team haven’t rowed back on them as Alonso explained that the new parts have taken the car forward – it’s just other teams have made bigger gains. “I think it was more the search for answers that drives me sometimes on a weekend that I know the goals will not be good enough to satisfy us or myself, when you’re not fighting for top five, or top seven, or whatever.

“Some other weekends you need to think if it’s okay we give up P9 today because we need to shortcut the timings a little but that we have for fixing the car.” “But, fundamentally, I think we need to keep working on the balance of the car. We added downforce in all the upgrades that we brought to the track, but we still cannot use all that downforce in an efficient way in lap time, because the balance maybe is not totally perfect in the corners.

“When you put the numbers, the theoretical numbers, on the simulator, you just get faster without too many problems – balance and things like that.
