Two-year-old Émile Soleil was staying at the isolated Alpine home of Philippe Vedovini, 58, when the child went missing in July last year.
. .The grandfather of a little boy who disappeared from a sleepy French village without trace eight months ago was investigated as part of an active criminal enquiry into child abuse, it emerged today.
Two-year-old Émile Soleil was staying at the isolated Alpine home of Philippe Vedovini, 58, when he went missingGendarmes meticulously search the outskirts of the village of Vernet It also confirmed that Mr Vedovini – who denies any wrongdoing and was not charged with any offence following the child abuse investigation – ‘has attracted the attention of gendarmes and constitutes one of their many lines of enquiry.’
Mr Vedovini, who was known as Brother Philippe when he worked at the school between 1991 and 1994, was implicated in the enquiry as an ‘assisted witness’. There was no immediate comment about the revelations from Mr Vedovini, nor his legal counsel, who have all been approached. Both remain devout Roman Catholics who brought up 10 children, including Émile’s mother, who is now known by her married name of Marie Soleil.
At the time, Mr Soleil was an activist linked to Action Francaise, the far-Right nationalist and royalist group, as well as the neofascist Bastion Social. Lead prosecutor Rémy Avon, who is leading the judicial enquiry into Émile’s disappearance said the possibilities that Émile had been murdered, kidnapped, or got involved in an accident were all being looked at.
The police have released a photo and description of Emile, who is almost 3ft tall, with brown eyes, and blond hair.Residents of Vernet have meanwhile been referring to the place as a cursed 'village of the damned' because of its links with disaster
