Eytan Lenko, the climate investor in charge of spending some of the fund, reveals he is using Mike Cannon-Brookes money to advocate for better fuel efficiency standards, to drive the uptake of electric vehicles.
Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes is targeting electric vehicles and the electrification of Australia’s homes as the first charitable projects backed by their $1.5 billion green fund.
Boundless has been operating in stealth mode since late last year, when Mr Cannon-Brookes and his wife committed to spending $1.5 billion of their personal wealth in a mix of philanthropic initiatives and for-profit investments aimed at cutting carbon emissions by 2030. Using the “Agile” technique, Boundless is breaking the climate change problem down into a series of “epics”, each of which it will pursue for three months, making investments, lobbying and forging partnerships, before moving on to a new topic.
“One of the big levers for that is a fuel efficiency standard. It’s telling that the only manufacturer that’s bringing models into Australia at scale is Tesla, and Tesla is the one manufacturer not affected by fuel efficiency standards,” he said.
