Steiger’s “Grace” beautifully performed and warmly applauded at San Diego Museum of Art
Attending a new music concert is like panning for gold. Sometimes you are rewarded with a nugget or two. Less frequently, everything is worthless sand.
Steiger’s “Grace” is a 25-minute opus for flute, English horn, viola, harp, and live electronics. It makes an attractive, persuasive case for adding an English horn to a “Debussy trio.”It begins with a middle C sounded and resounded among the quartet. It’s a subtle color difference between the winds and viola, and to this the neighboring D is gently added. This eventually blossoms into an unexpectedly modal harmony; Steiger’s previous music is typically more dissonant and frenetic.
Next, long, lyrical melodies in the flute, English horn, and viola combine to form a harmonic web, into which the harp sprinkles complementary notes and expands the range of the piece. It builds to a peak, culminating in a more chromatic language, played out in loud unison rhythms.
