The Dallas Bach Society's performance of Bach's St. John Passion carried dramatic urgency.
Singing was mostly excellent, and an orchestra using period instruments generally played with urgency.
Good things happened right from the start. The strings created dusky tones, the oboes provided pangs of dissonance and the choir then entered with a shout of “Herr” that sent shivers down the spine. He also proved sensitive to the text’s nuances, caressing high notes, growing emphatic when needed and expressing Peter’s sorrows with power and purity. Impressively, he also took the tenor solos, and handled them with aplomb.
Baritone Patrick Gnage’s arias needed more energy, and his low register sounded underdeveloped. Among the other vocal soloists, baritone Andrew Dittman stood out as a sturdy Pilatus.
