This may be the best movie STX Entertainment has ever released.
. While it’s tempting to argue that this is a grand comeback, the truth is that she never stopped being “this good” and thatis merely some of the best material she’s had in a while. Nonetheless, Lopez is confident enough both in herself and in the story being told that she never tries to steal the movie or overwhelm the moment-to-moment drama.Constance Wu is terrific as the lead and our viewpoint character.
is how the movie argues that the kind of thievery which Destiny and Romana engaged in was both necessitated by the bad actions of entitled rich men and by the mere fact that more legitimate means of advancement or empowerment weren’t available to the women left behind. Not unlike last year’s terrific, this “female-led con artist movie” highlights that the motivation wasn’t glitz, glamour, fashion and fame, but mere economic survival in a world stacked against them.
There are nits to be picked, such as a underused supporting cast and a lack of context for Ramona's life up to the point where she enters the film. But “good” is not the enemy of perfect, andis very, very good. It is a well-made, well-acted and sharply produced of-the-moment character drama with more than enough humor, glitz and genre tropes for those who just want a fun Saturday night at the movies.
