“Her voice played offense and defense; rapped and crooned; narrated and belted; whispered and shouted; glided and strutted; swerved and flew straight,” writes critic Bob Gendron.

SZA started her concert perched on the edge of a diving board and surrounded by an expanse of blue water projected on backdrops.

She spent the next 90 minutes navigating a sea of complex emotions — anger, desperation, joy, loneliness, regret, fulfillment, restlessness, uncertainty, fear — tied to relationships, romance and self-identity. Inhabiting virtual spaces created with wraparound screens and theatrical props, SZA used nautical themes as both scenery and metaphor.

Indeed, if the masses of people clogging the lower-level United Center concourse and waiting in impossibly long merchandise lines during opener Omar Apollo’s set weren’t proof enough, the throngs of voices singing in unison with her twisty verses confirmed the broad range of people for whom her lyrics speak. In line with her eclectic music — shaped by a backing band split on each end of the stage — SZA’s deliveries refused to follow patterns or adhere to structures.
