A shift in the approach to preserving lungs for transplantation could result in a higher number of available donor organs and revolutionize the field globally. According to research conducted by a team of scientists at the Toronto Lung Transplant Program and Ajmera Transplant Centre at the Universi

Lung transplantation is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a person’s damaged or diseased lungs with healthy lungs from a donor. This life-saving procedure can improve quality of life for individuals with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

“The clinical impact of this study is huge. It’s a paradigm shift for the practice of lung transplant.”, says lead author Dr. Marcelo Cypel, Surgical Director of the Ajmera Transplant Centre and a surgeon within the Sprott Department of Surgery at UHN. “In transplant, we still see a critical shortage of organs and people dying on the waitlist because there are not enough lungs to be transplanted.”, says Dr. Cypel, who is also a Professor in the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery at U of T.
