Rex Airlines has called on the Australian consumer watchdog to reopen investigations into Qantas after the national carrier suspended flights from Wagga Wagga to Melbourne.
Qantas is currently operating three return services per week from Wagga to Melbourne, but last week announced the routes would be suspended from August 1 and would not resume until March next year.
Qantas passengers can opt to travel from Wagga to Melbourne via Sydney, while Rex will continue to offer direct flights between the two cities. “Unfortunately we’ve had to suspend our Wagga-Melbourne flights due to a temporary change in aircraft availability at Melbourne that impacts our Wagga schedule,” she said.In 2020, the ACCC spent several months investigating Qantas' regional market but did not take action due to COVID-related border closures.
The regional airline moved to increase its services on regional routes with larger passenger numbers and took delivery of more aircraft in a bid to compete with Qantas.
