Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination for US health secretary faces strong opposition due to his past statements on vaccines and other health issues. Despite support from some for his environmental activism and criticism of 'Big Pharma', his views have drawn criticism from medical professionals and some lawmakers.
Donald Trump 's controversial pick for health secretary , Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK), is facing a crucial battle for Senate approval. If confirmed, RFK, the nephew of the slain President John F. Kennedy, will helm the US Department of Health and Human Services. His appointment has sparked fierce opposition from numerous medical professionals who express concerns about his views, which they believe contradict life-saving treatments and established scientific evidence.
However, RFK's vocal criticism of 'Big Pharma' and ultra-processed foods, coupled with his longstanding record as an environmental activist, has garnered support from individuals across the political spectrum.RFK's stance on vaccines has been particularly contentious. In the past, he has suggested vaccines are unsafe and ineffective, even promoting the debunked theory linking vaccines to autism. Democratic Senator Ron Wyden vehemently criticized Kennedy, stating, 'He has made it his life work to sow doubt and discourage parents from getting their kids life-saving vaccines.' However, during his Senate committee testimony, RFK asserted that he is not anti-vaccine and believes vaccines 'play a critical role in healthcare.' He emphasized that all his children have been vaccinated. Comparing his advocacy against mercury and toxic chemicals in fish to his stance on vaccines, RFK argued, 'I worked for years to raise awareness about the mercury and toxic chemicals in fish, and nobody called me anti-fish.'Caroline Kennedy, RFK's cousin and former US ambassador to Australia, has publicly appealed to US senators to reject his nomination. Last year, RFK stated on the Lex Fridman science podcast, 'There's no vaccine that is safe and effective.' He also expressed on an earlier podcast that he would have refrained from vaccinating his children if given the opportunity. Senator Wyden confronted RFK about these statements, questioning whether he was lying to Congress about his pro-vaccine stance or his previous podcasts. RFK defended himself, claiming he was interrupted during the recent podcast and did not complete his sentence. He insisted on correcting the record, stating, 'I was going to continue for every person, every medicine has people who are sensitive to them, including vaccines, right? So, he interrupted me at that point. I've corrected it many times.' Wyden also challenged RFK regarding his trip to Samoa before a measles outbreak that claimed 83 lives in 2019. Funded by a vaccine critic, Kennedy's visit coincided with declining vaccination rates in Samoa following the deaths of two babies in 2018 who received incorrectly mixed vaccines. Wyden accused Kennedy of exacerbating the outbreak by promoting his views in Samoa. RFK denied this, stating he never made any public statements about vaccines during his visit and asserting that no Samoan would claim he dissuaded them from vaccination because of him.Furthermore, some anti-abortion activists have voiced concerns about Kennedy's previous pro-choice statements. When questioned about his stance on abortion at the hearing, Kennedy aligned himself with Donald Trump's position, stating, 'I agree with President Trump that every abortion is a tragedy. I agree with him that we cannot be a moral nation if we have 1.2 million abortions a year. I agree with him that the states should control abortion.' Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan criticized Kennedy for what she perceived as a compromise of his long-held values 'in order to be given power by President Trump.
