There is a positive vibe circulating around the Rice football program. The Owls are coming off an appearance in the LendingTree Bowl and will play the 2023 season as a member of the American Athletic Conference for the first time.
Rice, which has seven games at Rice Stadium in 2023, opens on Sept. 2 at Texas. The Owls also have out-of-conference home games scheduled with Houston and Texas Southern. Bradley Rozner is getting an eighth year of eligibility. The wide receiver will not be with the team in the spring but will join the Owls in the summer.
Here are five things to watch as head coach Mike Bloomgren opens his sixth set of spring drills on Monday, the first of 15 practices that conclude with the Blue-Gray spring game on April 15 at 6 p.m.Quarterback is a position that Rice has been hit hard with injuries over the past two seasons. The Owls are bringing in a good one in J.T. Daniels, and Bloomgren is eager to watch his star get cranking. The West Virginia grad transfer is the Owls’ highest-ranked recruit in the rating era.
A.J. Padgett comes in the spring as the backup quarterback. Padgett played less than four games last season in a redshirt year, and started at the position in the Owls’ 38-24 loss to Southern Miss in the bowl game. The quarterback room includes T.J. McMahon, who is coming back from rehab after getting injured late in 2022, a year he started nine games.Former North Shore coach Jon Kay recently joined the Rice staff to coach linebackers.
Bloomgren is adding one more to the staff. But the Rice head coach has not released his name, only to say that the new assistant is a well-known coach who will be at practice on Monday.Several players who missed time last season, including absent in the LendingTree Bowl, are healthy and back on the field this spring. Receiver Cedric Patterson III injured an ankle in training camp last year. From a speed and agility standpoint, Patterson appears to be back to full speed.
