Buzzer-beater waved off as Rice edges UTSA in Conference USA tournament opener

Quincy Olivari had a team-high 18 points as Rice escaped with a first-round win over UTSA in the Conference USA tournament Thursday night.Japhet Medor’s attempt at a game-winning layup was waved off at the buzzer, and Rice held off UTSA for a 72-21 victory in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament Wednesday in Frisco.

The No. 11 seed Roadrunners trailed the sixth-seeded Owls by as many as 12 points in the first half and were down five with a minute to play before Jacob Germany scored in the paint to trim the margin to 72-69 with 24.2 seconds to play. UTSA forced a turnover on the following inbounds play, and with Rice guarding against a potential tying 3-pointer, Isaiah Addo-Ankrah drove for an uncontested layup to pull UTSA within one with 8.5 seconds remaining.

After Rice missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity, Medor drove the length of the court and hit a game-winning, double-clutch layup between two defenders as the buzzer sounded. Though UTSA stormed the court to celebrate the apparent win, an official review showed the ball was still in his hands as the clock hit zero.
