Richard Madeley has admitted he was so taken aback by Liam Payne’s unusual 'Dutch' accent at the Oscars that he didn’t initially realise who the One Direction star was.
Speaking in an accent that people have said sounds like a mix of Dutch, Welsh, Italian, English and American, the 28-year-old said: ‘I believe whatever he felt that he did, he had the right to do. I also felt there were three losers in one fight. He didn’t know, being Chris Rock, he didn’t want to do what he had to do, being Will Smith, and she did nothing, being Jada.’
On Tuesday’s edition of GMB, Madeley admitted that when the interview originally aired, he didn’t recognise the singer at first because his voice was so undistinguishable.Smith has since apologised for striking Rock on stage ‘We actually weren’t sure initially when that interview came up yesterday, we weren’t quite sure who he was! Because he didn’t sound like him,’ he said.
Presenter Vick Hope compared Payne’s changing accent to Tom Hardy, who she said has ‘gone through a few different accents’ in the past’. ‘So I was wondering maybe he’s method acting, maybe he’s preparing for a role. I don’t know. A lot of people were confused, a lot of people on Twitter were.’GMB enlisted the expertise of movie dialect coach Elsbeth Morrison to analyse the clip, who said that she could hear ‘at least five accents’.More:

The biggest Oscars scandal? Liam Payne’s new accentJust sometimes, someone will dare to ask a question that no one has ever asked before. Questions like: “What does Liam Payne have to say about all of this?” Coincidentally, that very question was asked yesterday, not long after Will Smith had slapped Chris Rock in front of everyone at the Oscars for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. We were waiting for a statement from the Academy. We wondered how Smith would justify it, if Rock would issue a response, or if Jada Pinkett Smith would make any comment. What we simply did not reckon with was that Payne, in fact, did have something to say about all of this.
