Defence Minister Richard Marles says in a “frank conversation” with his Chinese counterpart, he raised two incidents in which the Chinese military harassed Australian warships and aircraft. Follow updates here.

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt says the Albanese government is “taking action to fix” Direction 99 after the Administrative Appeals Tribunal interpreted it differently to the government’s intention. Watt said it was never the Albanese government’s “intention that the changes that were made to that ministerial direction would have the outcome that they did”.

“Even the advice that Andrew Giles was provided by his department when making that direction indicated that there would be no impact on people where we were talking about serious offences having been committed,” he said on ABC’s Insiders. “Of course, that’s not the way the AAT has interpreted it. They interpreted it in a way that was never intended by the government and that’s exactly why we’re now taking action to fix it.
