Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles is set to have his security detail increased, with a review to be carried out by the Australian Federal Police. News.com.au political editor Samantha Maiden approached the Defence Minister on Tuesday morning while he was going for a run around Parliament House with another Labor MP. The incident was not seen as a threat to the Deputy Prime Minister, but a security assessment will look at all aspects of his current arrangements. The Defence Minister has security for some events but does not have permanent security. Mr Marles has been facing scrutiny over his $3.6 million bill for chartered defence planes. “For several weeks, I have been lodging questions with Mr Marles' office over important transparency issues regarding his $3.6 million in VIP flights often without any reply at all from his taxpayer-funded staff,” Ms Maiden told Sky News Australia. “Throughout the morning, I lodged several questions with his office and again received no reply. “Mr Marles doesn't need an AFP detail to protect himself from scrutiny - he just needs to get his Office to answer questions from journalists and to release the details of his $3.6 million in flights - a practice that has worked just fine for 50 years.”
