'Please join us in keeping Seara and her family in our thoughts and prayers.'
RICHMOND, Ind. — Officer Seara Burton died Sunday night from injuries sustained when she was shot Aug. 10.
"Wayne County government will lower its flags and darken our courthouse at night, in concert with the city of Richmond, during this period of mourning. We call up on our entire community to join us in recognizing Officer Burton's ultimate sacrifice as she protected and served us all." "The family is extremely grateful for the massive amount of support from the community. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time," the release concluded.
Community members wishing to honor Burton and support her, her family and RPD are asked to find a safe location to pay respects along the route, according to RPD. As Burton fought for her life, Phillip Matthew Lee, 47, was charged with three Level 1 felony attempted murder counts, accused of shooting Burton and firing at two other RPD officers. He is charged with four other felonies related to the handgun he possessed and three types of drugs found in his scooter.
Burton was shot less than two weeks ahead of her planned wedding to Sierra Neal. On the wedding day, Aug. 19, Neal wore her wedding dress and was escorted to Burton's bedside in Miami Valley Hospital.
