A 26-year-old man is charged after a drink driving accident that left a trail of destruction in West Perth overnight when his car hit a rideshare vehicle carrying six passengers.

A man has been charged after an alleged drink-driving incident caused a cascade of damage in West Perth overnight.

Police allege the 26-year-old man's sedan collided with a rideshare vehicle carrying six passengers at the intersection of Charles St and Carr St, just after 1am. The force of the crash sent the rideshare vehicle, a Toyota Prius, careening into a gas junction outside an apartment complex, rupturing gas pipes.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old's car reportedly ricocheted across the street and mounting a kerb before ploughing into a row of rubbish bins and hitting a street light. The crash saw rubbish strewn over the ground and a light pole felled in Charles St. Police allege the 26-year-old tried to flee the scene on foot, but the passengers of the rideshare vehicle apprehended him on Newcastle St as police arrived. The man, from the northern Perth suburb of Westminster, will face court at a later date.
