Social media has erupted after Australian Olympic Committee boss John Coates claimed his controversial remarks were “misinterpreted”.
Mr Coates’ dismissive response to the Palaszczuk storm inevitably sparked furious backlash from the wider Australian community as well.
Australian author Mel Kettle wrote, “Nothing like a media statement to make a bad situation worse. This is what happens when ego gets in the way.”’s Alexander Grant tweeted, “Coates dug himself into a hole with his ridiculous comments and instead of this media release being the ladder he thinks it is, it’s an excavator.”
“There will still be an opening and closing ceremony in 2032 with the traditional parts. It’s very important that all the players in this understand that it’s a very big expenditure by an organising committee, a lot of thought has to go into it – the parade of nations, all the traditional parts.ABC News Breakfast“He’s fantastic. If we didn’t have John Coates, this would not have happened,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“I‘m going to give credit where credit’s due. It’s great for him that he was there with Sydney and now he’s ushered in this opportunity for Brisbane and Queensland.”Former Australian Olympic swimmer Kieren Perkins spoke to ABC News about Mr Coates’ remarks on Thursday afternoon.
