A Victorian Government push from the Daniel Andrews era to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 are at risk of being scrapped, with senior Labor figures pushing to ditch the policy.

Government sources have told the paper stakeholders have been consulted over the possible change, but it would likely cause division within Labor if there was a backflip. Police Association of Victoria Secretary Wayne Gatt said there was a “legitimate discussion” to be had about what the age of criminal responsibility should be, but that offending increased significantly after the age of 12.
“There must be an alternative services model in place… there’s got to be something that we can do with a kid who’s just been involved in an agg burg or who we’ve picked up in a stolen car overnight,” Commissioner Patton said.
