The British government is pressing councils to give pubs leeway to open early on Sunday to serve soccer fans gathering to watch the Lionesses take on Spain.

| The British government is encouraging local councils to allow pubs to open earlier so that fans can have a pint before they watch England play Spain in theThe game on Sunday will be the first time since England’s men beat West Germany to lift the soccer World Cup in 1966 that a senior England team has reached the final of a major global tournament.

Emma McClarkin, the association’s chief executive, said “we don’t want people queuing at the bar missing all the action” because drinks cannot be served before 11am.The government has resisted calls to change licensing laws for the occasion, saying it would need to pass parliament, which is not currently sitting, in time for the match. Instead, the government is urging local councils to fast-track pub applications for an exemption to the law.

However, Tory MP Damian Green, a member of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, said the government would have moved faster if the men’s team had made the final. “Demand from fans has been exceptional, with bookings filling rapidly, and there’s no doubt the day will be a huge boost for the sector,” UK Hospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls said.
