As a territorial junior, Riley Schick has been splitting time between the Roughriders and Regina Thunder.

“It’s been tremendous really, just being able to learn from everybody,” said Schick.

On a typical weekday, Schick will practice with the Riders in the morning, attend meetings and then get a couple hours off before it’s off to Thunder meetings and practice in the evening. “It’s a lot on the body for sure,” said the 6-foot-1, 299-pound Schick. “Just trying to keep your body together and make sure you have all the right nutrition and you’re drinking enough water and you’ve got the electrolytes.”

And while it might seem like a grind, the Lumsden product said it’s all worth it considering both jerseys he gets to put on each and every week. This is Schick’s second season on the Riders’ practice roster and he says being around professionals almost daily for the last two football seasons, has allowed him become a more of a leader on his junior football team.

“Dad always said it’s better to be a leader than a follower, so I’ve always taken that on,” said Schick, who is in his fifth and final year with the Thunder. “But being here definitely helps just being able to talk to the young guys and share some knowledge that might help them.”By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
