It was 2003 when John Hancock first asked his mother Gina Rinehart why her father’s wish to leave his grandchildren control of a family trust once brimming with mining assets had not been executed.
When Gina Rinehart’s son John Hancock began quizzing her about the disappearing trust fund assets that would spur a two-decade long row, he was met with “lies, bullying and intimidation” at every turn, a court has been told.
In the months after Lang’s death, Withers claims Gina embarked on a “special project” that saw the trust she was tasked with overseeing for her young children enter “death warrant” deeds allowing Hancock Prospecting to take its mining assets and recoup its one-third stake in the company. “There was no shortage of intelligence or determination to get to the bottom of what happened, but he was being met with all these denials and threats and financial difficulty.“Such was the imbalance of power that he even requested Hancock Prospecting and Gina to meet his expenses ... he didn’t have money to buy new brake pads and service his car.”
Withers said John’s persistent questions were met with the same story, that Gina merely embarked on a “clean up effort” of her father’s bankrupt estate and that the children should be grateful she did so.
