Both candidates said Margaret Thatcher was the best Tory leader during the hustings of party members

Rishi Sunak backed the reintroduction of grammar schools and Liz Truss ruled out imposing windfall tax on energy giants as both candidates pitched directly to Tory members in the race to No 10.

Foreign Secretary Ms Truss insisted her tax cuts were fully funded and argued the UK had to be “different” and “bold” to encourage economic growth. She also said she would support fracking “in areas where people want it to happen” and said the Government should do more to release North Sea gas reserves and utilise nuclear power.

He was grilled by an audience member who asked whether he had “stabbed Boris Johnson in the back” by resigning from Government.
