Even if he plays nice, the PM knows there is a real risk of the campaign disintegrating
Not only has Rishi Sunak’s predecessor Liz Truss indicated that she will stand for re-election, but she is once again busily trying to relitigate her record
Winning a fifth consecutive term in office would be difficult in normal circumstances. But this election confronts the Prime Minister with an especially impossible balancing act.with the explicit objective of putting as much distance as possible between the Conservatives and the disastrous political fallout from her mini-Budget. Unfortunately for him, not only has his predecessor indicated that she will stand for re-election but is once again busily trying to rehabilitate her record.
This, unlike the sins of his predecessors, is a problem of the Prime Minister’s own making. His decision to ambush his party with a snap election has torched almost every shred of goodwill he enjoyed in any quarter of it.
