Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth has stopped short of making a commitment to create a new class of visas for low-skilled workers following NSW Treasurer Matt Kean's plea to the government.
Mr Kean said NSW was suffering from a “worker drought” and called on the Federal Government to increase the intake of skilled migrants and introduce a new type of visa to fix the shortages.

Picture: Floss Adams. “So I’m really looking forward to that but the migration settings are certainly one of the streams in that jobs summit that we will be discussing very clearly in a few weeks’ time.”
The current migration program admits 160,000 people each year and Ms Rishworth said the government would be looking at ways to increase migration numbers but also focusing on Australian workers to stem the shortages. “I mean one of the really concerning things is that the former government after nine years hadn’t really planned for the end of the pandemic,” she said.
