Australia faces a potential challenge during the holiday season as COVID-19 cases rise, with hospitalisations and notified case numbers increasing in some states, and experts warning of new variants and waning immunity.

As the holiday season approaches in Australia , preparations for festivities and family gatherings are being overshadowed by rising COVID-19 cases. Victoria's Department of Health has reported a 12 percent increase in hospitalisations and a 10 percent rise in notified case numbers over the past week. In NSW, confirmed cases have increased by almost 8 percent. Additionally, there has been an increase in prescriptions for treatment and active outbreaks in aged care homes.

Experts like Benjamin Schwessinger from the Australian National University and Catherine Bennett from Deakin University warn that increased socialising, new variants, and waning immunity contribute to the uptick in cases, suggesting a peak around early December lasting until early January
