A man was shot while in his station wagon in Melbourne's northern suburb of Fawkner, before his shooter crashed into a fire hydrant, left his vehicle, and carjacked another to escape the scene.

A man has been shot while in his Mercedes station wagon in Melbourne's northern suburb of Fawkner, police say.

Armed Crime Squad detectives are investigating the incident which took place on Box Forest Road shortly before midday today. The offending car raced off after the shooting, then crashed into a fire hydrant and pole before occupants ran from the damaged vehicle and carjacked a nearby Ford Territory to escape.

The carjacking victims, a female driver and child, were not physically injured during the incident, police said.He has been transported to the hospital in a critical condition.
