Ahead of the NSW state election, the MP said there was a temptation for governments to lock future governments into long-dated projects
NSW Infrastructure Rob Stokes has warned state governments off locking in long-dated projects ahead of an election to preserve their legacy, saying that it’s the projects with bipartisan support that deliver the best outcomes for the public.
“It might be cute to lock in contracts, to ensure that your legacy remains if there’s a change of government,” he said. The high-profile project linking the safe Liberal seats of Sydney’s northern beaches and north shore with the city was put on ice earlier in the year in a move that infuriated residents in the MP’s own electorate, even as Labor promised to scrap the project.
When asked about a long-awaited review into Infrastructure Australia, he said the advisory body needed to pursue projects of national significance and to demonstrate realism on the projects it was canvassing rather than producing a list of pie-in-the-sky pursuits.
