Katter's Australian Party has clarified its strategy for changing Queensland's abortion laws , saying it wants to first amend them to mandate care for babies born alive.
On Tuesday Mr Katter – who has a very safe seat – explained his first step in the next parliament would be to re-introduce a failed private member's bill from earlier this year – about babies born breathing during an abortion. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists opposed the bill, saying it would cause "anxiety and emotional trauma" for patients and healthcare providers.Photo shows Anonymous woman lies in a bed with heart rate monitor clipped on finger at the Marie Stopes clinic in Melbourne.
"Whether intended or not, the bill will undoubtedly limit access to abortion services, discouraging practitioners from providing abortions due to fear of prosecution," RANZCOG said.Experts believe the proposed bill would "disproportionately impact rural, remote and First Nations communities" and restrict access to abortions.According to RANZCOG, about 1 per cent of abortions are done after 20 weeks.
This week a group of health and advocacy organisations — including RANZCOG, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Queensland Sexual Assault Network – released an open letter calling for abortion rights to be safeguarded.
