Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr.’s tough injury luck continued with a sprained ankle Friday in their first game after the All-Star break that leaves him questionable for Sunday against the Clippers.The Rockets’ point guard returned from a respiratory illness that kept him out of two games before the All-Star break, but in his first game back Friday rolled his left ankle during the Rockets’ 119-111 loss to the Magic in Orlando.
Porter did not practice Saturday, receiving treatment instead, and is questionable to play for the Rockets on Sunday against the Clippers. Rockets coach Stephen Silas said Porter’s availability will likely be a game-time decision.Porter’s injury happened midway through the third quarter against the Magic when he grabbed a steal and charged into the paint, only to have his left ankle roll outward, causing him to crumple to the ground.
“He felt it start to swell up,” Silas said. “Tried to keep him in there for a couple more minutes but then the timeout came and he was like, ‘I won’t be able to finish.’”Porter has missed 19 games this season, mostly due to a run of bad injury luck. He previously sprained his left ankle in the fifth game of the season, an Oct. 28 loss to the Jazz, and sat out the second half of that game but did not miss additional games because of the injury.
A bruised left thigh hampered Porter on and off throughout the first half of the season, causing him to miss 12 consecutive games in December. After that, he missed one game Jan. 28 in health and safety protocols with a non-COVID respiratory illness. The same illness flared up again just before the All-Star break.
