The Rockets on Sunday completed the long-anticipated signing of veteran center Willie Cauley-Stein, using the roster spot opened after they waived guard Ty Jerome last week after he was acquired in the deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Cauley-Stein is not expected to figure in the Rockets’ plans to open the season with a glut at the center position, but the move secures his rights for the Rockets’ G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The Rockets have Alperen Sengun, Bruno Fernando, Usman Garuba, Boban Marjanovic and Derrick Favors at center. Only Garuba has been used at an additional position. Fernando, who went to camp with an exhibit 10 contract, was signed to a four-year deal and has been working as the primary backup to Sengun.
The Sacramento Kings made Cauley-Stein the sixth pick of the 2015 NBA draft out of Kentucky. He has averaged 8.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 22 minutes per game in his career. He played in 20 games with the Mavericks and 76ers last season.
