After a long and storied career, Roger Federer has announced his retirement from professional tennis.The 20-time Grand Slam champion revealed in a letter posted on social media that, at 41 years old, recovering from injury and surgeries made it challenging to return to competitive form. Federer will play his last ATP match at the 2022 Laver Cup.
Before he clocked over 1,500 singles matches throughout the course of his 24 years on the tour, Federer began as a talented but fiery teenager from Switzerland.As an up-and-coming player, he made his mark at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships, where at 19 he defeated seven-time winner Pete Sampras in the fourth round.It would take another two years, in 2003, for him to win his first Grand Slam at the All England Club, his first of eight at the tournament.
Despite continuing to chase history, a persistent knee injury forced Federer to undergo surgery during the pandemic. His last go at another Grand Slam win ended where it all started, at Wimbledon, where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in 2021.With 103 titles and over 1,200 wins, his longevity has encompassed multiple tennis generations. He ends his stellar career as a titan of the sport.
