Former professional cyclist Melissa Hoskins tragically lost her life in a car accident outside her Medindie home in December 2023. The accident involved a car driven by her husband, Rohan Dennis, also a former professional cyclist. Dennis faced charges including dangerous driving causing death and aggravated driving without due care. However, after reaching a plea deal, the prosecution dropped those charges, and Dennis pleaded guilty to one aggravated count of creating likelihood of harm.
Dennis appeared briefly in an Adelaide court on Friday, weeks after entering his guilty plea. The court will hear victim impact statements from Melissa Hoskins' loved ones at Dennis's next scheduled appearance in April. Judge Ian Press discussed with prosecutors the duration needed to accommodate potentially numerous victim impact statements. An aggravated charge of creating likelihood of harm carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment and a five-year loss of licence. This court case occurred during the Tour Down Under, Australia's premier cycling event, marking the beginning of the UCI World Tour.
