The post office was previously named for President Andrew Jackson, whose treatment of Indigenous people was some of the most brutal in U.S. history
In a step highlighting a San Diego leader, local officials on Thursday celebrated a law renaming the Rolando post office for Susan Davis, who represented the area in Congress for nearly two decades until 2021.
“I’m so happy to have active, engaged citizens who care about the symbols in our community,” Jacobs said at the ceremony.Davis called the dedication “one of those ‘pinch me’ moments” and gave a nod to the role postal workers play in supporting businesses and residents. Although most federal name designations honor people who are no longer alive, Congress carved out an exception for presidents, members of Congress and judges over the age of 70, Davis said, adding that she was pleased “to have made that cut.”
