Without quarantine, easily available testing, masks or other public health measures to limit its spread, a variant as infectious as Omicron and as severe as Delta could cause chaos in this country within weeks.The Albanese government understands the threat of a new variant emerging over the northern hemisphere’s winter. Last week, the chief medical officer suggested the government could task “the appropriate body” with creating a plan for the next variant and the next surge.

Australians need to trust that our government knows what it’s doing, that they will be safe and protected. The public needs strong, inclusive federal and state leadership that does not bypass medical professionals during our greatest health crisis.
