The only person Spandau Ballet bassist Martin can trust is his wife Shirlie, Roman said
Roman Kemp, the Capital FM DJ and I'm a Celebrity star, has spoken about growing up in the spotlight - and he says dad Martin 'does not have one friend' because of the pitfalls of fame. The only person Spandau Ballet bassist Martin can trust is his wife Shirlie, the Wham! backing singer, Roman also said.
Roman, 30, was speaking in an interview with Radio Times, saying his dad didn't shield him from the dark side of living in the public eye, the Express reports. "My upbringing gave me an opportunity to see that that the world isn’t as nice as people think it is," said Roman. “If someone thinks about fame, they think about the best parts of it. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a sob story for famous people – they do have it good. But it’s also very lonely. My dad does not have one friend.“He lives his life like that because he’s had so many people in his life that he thought he could trust, then realised he couldn’t. My dad’s favourite person is my mum."
Despite being very aware of the more difficult elements of fame, Roman has followed in his parents’ footsteps by pursuing a career in the spotlight. He hosts the Capital FM Breakfast Show and won new fans after entering the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Jungle in 2019.
