Two Romanians living in Sydney have been jailed over a scam where about $36,000 was illegally obtained from victims through ATM machines in two big Australian cities.
A Romanian man and woman have been sentenced to jail for a"shimming" scam in which $36,000 was defrauded from victims through ATM s in Sydney and Melbourne.
The woman was sentenced to two years and six months' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of one-year and six months. "ATM shimmers are thin, card-sized metal devices that act like a spacer when inserted into the card slot of an ATM," an AFP statement read. Police obtained ATM shimmers after executing a search warrant in Inner West Sydney suburb Rhodes last year. Individuals believed to have received packages containing shimmers sent from the UK, China and US were identified, with AFP officers later witnessing the Romanian nationals install the devices in Melbourne and Sydney ATMs.
