The Thunderbirds are queens of Super Netball again, after beating the Vixens 59-57 in a grand final classic.
The Adelaide Thunderbirds are queens of Super Netball again, overcoming the Melbourne Vixens in a grand final classic, 59-57.Played at Adelaide Entertainment Centre in front of 9,649 fans, the Thunderbirds also kept their undefeated streak at home intact to round out the 2024 season. It also finished closer than most expected, considering the last two times these teams had met, the Thunderbirds outscored Vixens by a combined 40 goals.
"Their centre pass defence set-ups were something that we generally see a little bit later in the game and perhaps what we were trying to put out wasn't necessarily right for those structures. With such a big difference in standards between the grand final and their last meetings, Obst commended the Vixens clinical play that made it difficult for her players to steal the ball.
"We started to get higher up the court to try and hunt that ball, so her ability to recognise that she needed to do that was tremendous and I'm really proud that we were able to adjust." Aiken-George played a major part getting Swifts to the grand final in 2023, before they lost the decider to the Thunderbirds in extra time by a single goal.
"I've been on the go since Gigi was born … and she has no idea what's going on but it's just extra special to do it with this group of people. As the Swifts and Firebirds watched the grand final from afar, having finished towards the bottom of the ladder, we wonder if they may now have regrets about letting her go.Had they had Aiken-George on their side, who knows where they might have been.
The total attendance for the league in 2024 now sits at 366,222. Making it the most attended women's sports season in Australian history of all the codes. The Jamaican shooter has moved twice in two years to try and extend her netball career and she's just proved how much her experience is worth. It wasn't her most clinical performance but she stood tall and was a solid target with 42 goals at 83 per cent.
They become the first team in the Super Netball era since the Sunshine Coast Lightning in 2017/18 to go back-to-back.The players are scrapping hard, they're hitting the deck in this final minute with the title on the line. The Vixens goal attack has sunk a long bomb with 1:30 left in the game and they trail 59-55.
