Long before motorbikes were used for mustering, Ron Woodall had been breaking in horses on stations. He has spent his life in the world of bucking bulls and broncs, becoming a legend in the rodeo community.
The son of a horse breaker, Mr Woodall would go on to spend the next 70 years in the white-knuckle, belt-buckle world of bucking bull s and broncs, cementing himself as king of the Australian rodeo community.
"I was always on horseback in those days, so it was all just part of the lifestyle."But after 18 years on the rodeo circuit, with a growing family and a few injuries "that came with the scene" including a broken wrist and broken pelvis, Mr Woodall and his family shifted gear to focus on running rodeos, as well as breeding and training horses, steers and bulls for their rodeos.
The third-generation bull and bronc rider said it wasn't about money or prizes that kept them interested.Grandson Sam started riding calves when he was three and was runner-up Australian champion in 2018.Well before the gates swing open on a Woodall Rodeo, the family are hard at work setting up to make sure everything runs like a Swiss watch.Daughter Tania runs the gates and program, and the stock arrive with gleaming coats in Woodall trucks, fresh from the farm.
It's a work ethic few could keep up with, but rodeo is "like air" for the 83-year old legend, according to long time friend, former bull rider and rodeo announcer Dale Keatley.Mr Keatley said the natural stock and horse man had bred some of the finest stock in the business.
