, saying that it was Gilbert's reaction that sealed her fate. "That's the tweet that got the show canceled," Barr said of Gilbert's tweet that described Barr's original comments about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett as "abhorrent."
"It was a perfect storm, kind of a little bit too perfect," Barr said. "Sometimes I think, 'Was this orchestrated, the whole thing?' Asking me back? Needing so badly to slam Trump and people who voted for him." Gilbert spearheaded and was an executive producer on the "Roseanne" revival, a title she retains on "The Conners."
Barr said she has not spoken to Gilbert since that "abhorrent" tweet and has no intention of talking to her again. "When somebody just doesn't care how their actions affect you, what's there to talk about?" she asked. In fact, she said she hasn't talked to anyone from the show since her firing and intends to keep it that way.
She also insists she has sworn of Ambien following the tweet. At the time, Barr claimed that she was in an Ambien haze when she wrote the tweet. She further says she had no idea that Jarrett was black when she compared her to "Planet of the Apes." Nevertheless, ABC swiftly fired Barr. And it was only after she negotiated with the network to give up all of her rights to the characters she created that "The Conners" was born.
Premiering as the number one rated new sitcom of the year last season, though down from the "Roseanne" revival the season before, "The Conners" returns to ABC for a second season on Tuesday, September 24 at 8 p.m ET.
