What's going wrong with the Jaguars? What's going right? And where do the Jags go from here? The Times-Union breaks it down in a midseason roundtable.

I began the year expecting the team to win six games in their first year under head coach Doug Pederson. Through eight games, that seems to be tracking. Still, like many others, I'll admit, my expectations changed a bit after the team won its Week 3 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers. So, Gene Frenette:

Trevor Lawrence is still adjusting to a new system and coaching staff. Still, I expected him to be better. Travis Etienne is an emerging star, and credit to the offensive line for being a bigger strength than anticipated and a pleasant surprise. I think the biggest weakness is Jacksonville’s inability to finish off games. They’ve had a legitimate shot to win each game they’ve played in. A stark contrast from last season where the Jaguars lost 10 games by more than a touchdown.

On offense, the lack of a big-play wide receiver over the top and Trevor Lawrence's decision-making are the major issues. The Jaguars may solve that problem with one move in getting Calvin Ridley for next season. Winning is more about player execution when games hang in the balance than coaching calls. Pederson has this team playing at a respectable level. It just has to make another play or two in clutch moments to ignite some kind of turnaround. I think Doug Pederson has done a good job of raising the floor of Jacksonville. He’s installed a good offensive system and the Jaguars defense has the potential to be elite.

With how the 2022 season is unfolding, do you feel the Jaguars did enough in the offseason to build around Lawrence?Nope. And I felt that way prior to the season starting even after the team went out and signed Christian Kirk. Though Kirk is a good slot receiver, that's what was expected of him from the onset. It's becoming apparent over the course of the year by observers that he, Zay Jones and Even Engram aren't enough to get it done.

The Jaguars can win with this group, but Trevor must avoid the mistakes that end up costing his team games.No. They should’ve drafted a receiver. They took a flyer on Kevin Austin Jr. as an undrafted free-agent, and it didn’t pan out. They brought in Zay Jones and Christian Kirk, who are great locker room guys. But they aren’t guys who consistently stretch the field.
