The nematode was able to do so by entering into cryptobiosis, which is an organism's ability to halt its metabolism in unfavourable conditions, like the extreme cold temperatures of Siberia. Like other species of nematode, it produced the sugar trehalose at a biochemical level when mildly dehydrated in the lab, potentially enabling them to withstand freezing and intense dehydration.
