The Home Office has approached the owners of Portland Port about plans to house asylum seekers in floating accommodation at the Dorset site A row has erupted over Home Office plans to house migrants in a barge at a Dorset commercial port.

Richard Drax, Conservative MP for South Dorset, said he was “very concerned” about the south coast location being used to house several hundred people who arrived in the UK on small boats. In addition, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was “bringing forward proposals” to use the Catterick Garrison barracks in his North Yorkshire constituency as another site, Mr Jenrick said, as he confirmed that the Government was also “exploring the possibility” of housing migrants in cruise ships.

Following the Government’s approach, Bill Reeves, chief executive of Portland Port, said port officials were liaising with the Home Office about the next steps.
