Former Labour leader has been barred from standing for the party again in Islington North but is understood to be pushing for a U-turn amid speculation he could mount an independent campaign
after the party opened the process for selecting a new candidate in the seat he has represented for four decades.and allied MPs have pushed for Mr Corbyn to be allowed to stand – amid speculation he could challenge Labour as an independent if he is blocked.that the incumbent “can’t be a Labour MP” and another accused him of “ego” in trying to hold on to his position.
Applications for Islington North close at the start of this week, with the result announced on 1 June after an accelerated selection process.The local party branch said in a statement that members wanted to “be able to choose our prospective parliamentary candidate from amongst any Labour party member in good standing”, in a hint they would back Mr Corbyn.
Paul Mason, a high-profile former business journalist at the BBC and Channel 4 News, confirmed this week that he would apply to be the Labour candidate. He was once a prominent backer of Mr Corbyn but grew more distant from him following disagreements over Brexit, foreign policy and the way the Labour party was being run.that if he faced a campaign in which Mr Corbyn was an independent candidate, he would “focus all my fire on the Tories” rather than attacking his left-wing rival directly.
