'Once we were lifting off and we actually saw the blaze, we realized at that point how serious the matter was'. 9News

A Navy helicopter has rescued a number of families on NSW's South Coast as flames beared down upon their properties.

The Tianjara bushfire near Mount Conjola was rapidly bearing down on the Tytherleigh family, who were unaware of how much danger they were in. Thankfully, a Royal Australian Navy helicopter was monitoring the path of the fire overhead, and swooped in to bring the residents to safety.Lindsay Tytherleigh said he was amazed by how professional the crew were."They said it's our opinion that that fire is coming directly for this hill and it's you know, make the call now - you either stay or you come with us," said Mr Tytherleigh.

"Once we were lifting off and we actually saw the blaze, we realized at that point how serious the matter was."The family, along with a number of neighbours, were taken to HMAS Albatross in Nowra to wait out the blaze.
